Someone added these really old drawings of Indian!Dangerous Ladies to every A:TLA group on Deviantart recently, and suddenly they’re getting a lot of attention.

Unfortunately, it’s also led a lot of people to think these drawings mean I am a fan of “The Last Airbender” movie, which I am most certainly not. (I was sent notes by some folks trying to recruit me to “show support” for a sequel… nonononono)

I just thought it would be interesting to see the Dangerous Ladies as they might have been interpreted, since they were my favorite characters and I really love Indian fashion/design. (Even if the movie wasn’t accurate in the least.)

Mai looks more like a Star Wars character but that’s because I was trying to imitate the film’s half-assed mishmash cultural influences. XD;

atla-annotated:

Appa’s saddle strongly resembles the lotus flower on Buddha statues.

The roots of a lotus are in the mud, the stem grows up through the water, and the heavily scented flower lies pristinely above the water, basking in the sunlight. This pattern of growth signifies the progress of the soul from the primeval mud of materialism, through the waters of experience, and into the bright sunshine of enlightenment.

The Airbenders: The people of the Air Nomads were, without any seen exception, all benders due to the high level of spirituality of their people.

Their enlightenment is reflected in their art, clothing etc which are heavily based on Buddhism. I will point out and provide references for that in later posts.

lovebending :) by *nana-51

I was asked to draw a one page comic with Katara/Yue having a teary time, and ending with a “LETS MARRY” sort of declaration.

So I thought: “How can I make this as credible as possible?” And this happened :)

I don’t totally follow what’s going on, but I’m always on board for shipping Water Tribe girls.

“Korra IS tan. Because tan IS dark-skinned. What do you want us to call her? Black? Because she’s not.”

Can you please not use my artwork to spread such gross racist messages?  How about asking permission before using people’s artwork? I don’t want to be associated with this.

For the record, Korra (like all waterbenders) is based on Inuits.  So she is a dark-skinned Asian.  She is not a tan white girl.
